Music transcription

Transcribe music from YouTube, phrase by phrase

Transcribing a song is essentially "loop, listen, write, repeat" — dozens or hundreds of times. Multi Looper is the loop half of that loop. It gives you fast, pitch-preserved loops on arbitrarily small sections.

Start transcribing

Good transcriptionists build a section for every 1-2 bar phrase in the song, work through them in order, and come back the next day to refine. Multi Looper is built for exactly that workflow.

Very short loops on dense passages

For a fast chromatic line or a dense chord voicing, a 1-second loop is often what you need. Multi Looper accepts sections of any length — there is no minimum. Use keyboard arrows to nudge start/end times by 1 second (or Shift + arrows for 1-second precision), and set per-section speed to 0.5x.

When you can clearly hear the inner voices, bump the speed back up to check that what you wrote makes sense at tempo.

Walking the whole song

After a first pass you will have 20-50 sections covering the entire song. Uncheck the ones that are done. Check the ones that still need work. Press play. The tool walks through the remaining work in order, looping each section until you press stop. No playhead dragging.

Revisiting tomorrow

Transcription is not a one-session task. Because Multi Looper saves sections per video in localStorage automatically, you can close the tab, open your notation software, come back the next day, and your work is exactly where you left it. This is essential for long pieces.

Workflow tips from experienced transcriptionists

  • Transcribe bass first — it anchors harmony and rhythm
  • Use 0.5x only for dense passages; 0.75x works for most melodies
  • Create a section for every 1-2 bar phrase, not larger
  • Name each section with the measure numbers for easy reference
  • Use gradual speed-up to verify: if a section sounds right at 0.5x, 0.75x, and 1.0x, you transcribed it correctly

FAQ

Can I export my transcription from Multi Looper?

Multi Looper is a loop tool, not notation software. Use MuseScore, Sibelius, or Finale for notation. Multi Looper's role is accelerating the listening side.

Can I loop 2 seconds or less?

Yes. There is no minimum loop length. The YouTube player handles very short loops cleanly on most videos.

Does speed change affect pitch for transcription?

No. YouTube's IFrame player preserves pitch at all speeds from 0.25x to 2x, so your transcribed key stays correct.
